Many homes, businesses, and casinos were destroyed. In 2005 Hurricane Katrina devastated the gulf coast. This allows Mississippi casinos to offer 24-hour dockside gambling, while still being classed as a riverboat. These stationary barges are built with the appearance of land-based casinos, rather than that of a boat. Since Mississippi law does not require riverboat casinos to cruise, almost all of the casinos are actually built on stationary barges. Casinos in Mississippi are also required to be permanently moored at a dock, and never set sail. Mississippi state gambling laws restrict casinos to only be located on the coast of the Mississippi River, and counties that border that river. In 1990 Mississippi became the third state to legalize riverboat gambling, today the riverboats are the only casinos found in the state, except for three Indian casinos, which are all associated with the same Tribe.
